IRISH OPEN MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Fitzwilliam LTC will again host the Irish Open Men’s Tennis Championships this year from July 19th to 24th. This will be a $US 15,000 International Tennis Federation "Futures" event. Qualifying rounds take place on July 17 th and 18th.

The event this year is being sponsored by Green Property, who recently announced a joint venture with worldwide private investment firm TPG to invest €900M in Irish and UK commercial real estate. Stephen Vernon, Chairman of Green Property, and a long standing member of Fitzwilliam LTC, said “we are very pleased to join with Fitzwilliam LTC and Tennis Ireland in supporting Irish tennis through our sponsorship of the 2010 Irish Open”

Fitzwilliam has an association with the Irish Open that runs back as far as 1879 and is one of the oldest tennis events in the world. Notable previous winners of this event have included tennis "greats" like Rod Laver and Tony Roche, as well as our own Sean Sorensen and Matt Doyle.
It is anticipated that this year’s Irish Open will have a strong Irish interest. Our current leading men's player, Conor Niland, recently won the Israel Open Championships and reached a career high ranking of 165. Irish number 2 player, Louk Sorensen, gained acclaim earlier in the year by qualifying for and winning a round at the Grand Slam Australian Open. Our two top juniors, John Morrissey and Sam Barry, are world-ranked 39th and 67th at under 18 level, respectively, and took part in the French Open at Roland Garros last week.

The Irish Davis Cup team also performed well having beaten Turkey in March . They faced Lithuania, surprise winners over Great Britain, in the next round also at Fitzwilliam LTC from July 9th to 11th and were narrowly defeated three games to two.

Details of the draw for the Irish Open will be announced shortly. Admission to the Fitzwilliam event is free of charge and matches will take place daily from 11am till 8pm.
