Day 1 results of The Cannon Kirk Squash Irish Open (Qualifiers)

The qualifying rounds for the 2010 Canon Kirk Irish Squash Open began today at Fitzwilliam. Unfortunately, Ireland’s Arthur Gaskin, Keith Moran and Niall Rooney both lost in the opening round.  Irish hopes for this evening rest on Derek Ryan who is currently taking on England’s Shaune le Roux who has just won the opening game.   Ryan is fresh from winning the World over 40’s Masters title in Germany at the weekend. Former winner, Borja Golan, who has been out of the game injured for ten months, came through his opening qualifying match today.

England’s Leonie Holt and Canada’s Samantha Cornett had noteable victories in the Ladies competition, both coming from two games down to win their matches.

Day 2 results of The Cannon Kirk Squash Irish Open (2nd round Qualifiers)

Irish women go through as men’s seeds tumble on opening day of Cannon Kirk Homes Irish squash Open at Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club

Irish number one and number one seed in the Cannon Kirk Homes Irish Squash Open, Madeline Perry had a smooth win over Sina Wall of Germany in straight sets. This performance keeps Madeline on track for her fourth Irish Open title.

Ireland’s Aisling Blake also progressed to the quarter-finals, beating Leonie Holt of England in four sets.

In the men’s event, seeds tumbled to qualifiers in the lower half of the draw. Mark Krajcsak (HUN) seeded 7 had the toughest opponent in former winner, Spanish Borja Golan, who came through in three straight sets. Borja, a former world no. 10, had to come through the qualifiers and is clearly back in form and a serious contender for the title.

Qualifier Bradley Hindle (MLT) had an impressive victory over no. 4 seed Nicolas Mueller (SUI), coming through in four sets.

Frenchman Gregoire Marche accounted for the defeat of former Cannon Kirk finalist Davide Bianchetti (ITA), seeded 6. Bianchetti looked out of form, losing to a more consistent player.

Finally, fellow Frenchman Castagnet beat no. 2 seed Stewart Boswell of Australia in a five set marathon lasting 72 minutes.

Elsewhere in the women’s event, former world no. 1 Natalie Grainger (USA) had an easy win over Sharon Wee of Malaysia. Natalie Gringham (NED) seeded 3 and competing in her first event since having a baby two months ago, came through a tough match against Annelize Naude (NED) in five sets.

Former Irish Open champion and world number 1 Vanessa Atkinson (NED) had an easy win over qualifier Lauren Siddall (ENG). Qualifier Victoria Lust (ENG) took out number 8 seed Alanna Miller (CAN), who plans to study medicine this year in NUI Galway.

Quarter-final matches in both draws begin tomorrow.
